On June 20 and 21, we will be celebrating Gay Pride Week here in Los Angeles.
The origin of CSW/LA goes back June 28, 1969, when the New York. Police Department was making one of its usual brutal raids on a sleazy, fastbuck gay bar on Christopher Street in NYC's Greenwich Village called the Stonewall. As New York's finest were herding the drags and queens out of the bar with their customary roughness and humiliating insults, some of those nellie queens began, for the first time, to sass back. Then someone was heard to shout "Gay Power," a desperate cry that became the seed which grew into the entire gay movement as we know it today.
With that cry, the crowd turned on the cops, shoving them back into the bar and locking them inside (some of the cops were already inside pilfering
the cash register). Then someone set the curtains afire! Those cops thought their time had come. Word travelled fast, and gays and other Village residents poured into the streets, venting aggressive anger upon police reinforcements as they arrived. The riot raged on for three days and nights, with rallying, push and shove, and militant speeches as the police tried unsuccessfully to clear the streets.
Today we have political and economic strength and it's growing every month. Gays are tired of being shoved around, trampled on and generally treated like the scum of the earth. Christopher Street West/Los Angeles is providing the opportunity for us to celebrate our new found freedoms. CSW/LA will raise a great deal of money during Gay Pride Week, and it will all go to organizations who are fighting to make life better for each one of us. Our hats are off to CSW/LA.
